CHICAGO – Columbia’s Chester Kuttner Foundation – celebrated its 22nd season of participation in the Junior Sailing Program at Columbia Yacht Club. This year’s scholarship winners, Brandon Clare, Tajay Parker, Gwendolyn Parker and Amarion Weathersby are all students at South Shore Fine Arts Academy. With the help of South Shore’s Student Guidance Counselor, Etta McChristian, the four children were chosen from the schools third, sixth and seventh grades to receive the funding necessary to participate in the 2016 Summer Program.
The scholarship for each child pays for a 4-week session in Columbia Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing School, where they are immersed in the nautical community of Chicago and taught the sport of sailing by US Sailing certified coaches. No matter what the skill level, the Program provides an experience in sportsmanship and teamwork that lasts a lifetime.
Columbia’s Chester Kuttner Foundation is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation founded in 1994 in honor of the late Chester Kuttner. A lifetime member of Columbia Yacht Club and devoted sailor, Kuttner was an avid participant in many of city council committees addressing the growing isolation of the residents in the city’s public housing.
The foundation was organized for charitable and educational purposes and is intended to foster, encourage and support competitive sailing among youth on local, regional and national levels and the education and training of youth in the sport of sailing.
